The heads of the Chinese and Russian militaries recently held their first direct phone call, in what the official New China News Agency called a sign of “deepening pragmatic cooperation” between the giant neighbors. What do you think they talked about?

They talked about the best way to remove the United States off the board as a player, i.e., to marginalize the U.S. Also, to work out agreements regarding weapons developements and spheres of influence.
Does anyone here really think that things have changed with Russia? Please! Putin is KGB!

…And pumping some of that Russian oil into the Chinese industrial furnace, you can bet.
To Byron’s point: I saw an interview with a “babushka” from the early 90s, as Gorby was running into his first economic crisis.
This old woman, standing in the snow in Moscow, said “Stalin was a butcher. He murdered my uncle, he murdered my Grandparents. But when we had Stalin, we had toilet paper. And I want toilet paper!” Made perfect sense to her.

My guess is that they talked about one of two things, possibly both.
First: The budding conflict between India and Pakistan and coming American interventions in Pakistan. Second: Central Asia, an oil-rich region of great interest to them both, and in which American and American-backed interests currently are strong.
Do I win anything? =)

Talked about exports of defense goods. Russia desparately needs cash. China is a well finaned buyer with large demands.
I agree with Byron on their talking about the United States, but I also think they discussed sidelining India on some of their developments.
Aircraft Carrier, nuclear submarines, ground based ballistic missiles.
I keep having this nagging thought the last several weeks – that Russia keeps raising the cost of the Gorshkov carrier modernization for India at the prompting of China.
It wouldn’t surprise me if China ended up being the buyer of that modernized Carrier, or at least slow it’s delivery.
Cheers!
