Mr. Hupf,

It is an honor to have you read our work here, and comment so favorably.

I used to comment to my Dad (World War II Navy veteran) that "I don't know how the hell you did it". Still applies. To all of you who fought and won that war, and maintained the peace afterward.

Semper Fi. I will look to post on Peleliu in the last two weeks of September.

These articles on the Guadalcanal campaign are excellent. There are many excellent accounts of the Guadalcanal campaign, many of which I have read. These articles, now being posted in the U S Naval Institute Blog add more excellent detail to what has already been written.

I had previously mentioned that I was a Marine Officer assigned to duty aboard the USS Portland (CA 33) but I did not board her until April 6th, 1944 at Majuro atoll, at which time the Portland was assigned to one of the (what were then called) the fast carrier groups.

The Portland participated in the Guadalcanal campaign from the beginning until she took a Japanese torpedo in her stern in the night action off Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. She was ultimately towed to Sydney, fitted with a makeshift stern, which enabled her to make it to Mare Island in San Francisco bay. There were still men aboard the Portland in April 1944, who were aboard her on the night she took the torpedo, but few talked about the event. The Portland returned to duty in late summer or early fall 1943.

I'm looking forward to a blog entry on Pelelieu, the 65th anniversary of which will be in September. I will be able to offer one or more personal recollections on that engagement.
