My DAD and several of his brothers were in WWll and all came home. some injured or wounded and some mentally effected for life. All were strong Christians and loved their country.
God will heal our land if we will seek his face and ask for forgiveness. As American we live a better life than most of the world and we can look forward to each day. This is not true of most of the world where hunger, poor water, no health care and no hope are the norm. Let us each be thankful for what we have and strive to make it better. We cannot lead the world to a better place by backing up and trying to lower our standards. We can only lead by example and by helping those willing to help themselves. I dare say no one on earth below the ruling class would not give everything to come to America. And many of those would give their life if only their children could come. Thank God every minute of every day for what we have. God Bless America and the American soldier.

When I was a small boy living in England, I--along with the rest of the country--sang "O Valiant Hearts" on Remembrance Day, which is what Veterans Day is called throughout the Commonwealth.

Here's a url to a pretty good version of it:

SJS:

Great post. Wonderful perspective. Hard to believe, but when we were kids, WWI veterans were still in the workplace in many areas. They were the same age then that a lot of Vietnam veterans are now.

A superb analysis of what the Great War's effect on France was can be found in the opening chapter of Alistaire Horne's masterpiece "To Lose a Battle; France 1940".

Alas,no can do - had them mounted and framed to preserve them a number of years ago - now hanging by my desk in the new library as I write. Might try to see if I can catch a picture via camera, but no guarantees...

"I have a cherished set of sketches from his time in France – they are a study of French soldiers over time from 1914 through 1917, from exuberant youth to prematurely aged and bitterly tired maturity."

Any chance you could scan these and put them online?
