My father Herbert F. Grant was a Sgt. in the marines in the south pacific.
I have been trying to determine which outfit he was in.
He was first under fire on Dec. 15 1943 at Norokinia (unsure of spelling, his ledger is blurred.) Bougainville. He had mentioned his battalions' motto was "first to fight". Can you help me?
He was also in the Phillipines at Tacloban and Leyte.
Thank you very much, Mark Grant

CINCLAX,

You are correct that the 4th Marines were reformed out of the Raiders. They also existed before the war in China, and were captured at Corregidor in 1942. They were part of the 6th Marine Division which fought at Okinawa.

However, there was, and is, a 4th Marine Division. In WWII they fought on Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. The 4th MarDiv is currently the home of the ground combat units of the Marine Corps Reserve.

John...

You're correct; there is a difference between 3rd Marine Division and the regiment of the same label. My bad. In the next (and last) Bougainville installment you'll see the 4th Marines, who were never a division, only a regiment formed from the "old" Raider battalions. Glad you're enjoying this "forgotten" campaign

I'm enjoying these articles but have one small item for clarification:

When referring to USMC units, 3rd Marines is usually in reference to the regiment, not division. Since the 3rd Marine Regiment was part of the 3rd Marine Division during WWII and the Bougainville campaign, this can be confusing to the reader until we get used to it.
