Question: Guess how this .jpg was saved on the WhiteHouse.gov website? Answer: hero_haiticoastguard.jpg
The men and women of the Coast Guard and their sister services are heroes in my book too!

Nothing against the Army – but there should be a Coast Guard Admiral in command down there. The Coast Guard was the ONLY organization that had a clue in New Orleans when Katrina hit, and they have the expertise and experience to run large relief operations.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Lt. Gen. Honore in charge? And agree completely, the Coast Guard did one hell of a job. If MOH was given to Coasties, they’d have a bunch to pass out.
It’s going to take a ground commander working with a sealift commander and an airlift commander to get things moving and helping people out. Roads are in terrible shape, scattered electricity, next to no water. The Coast Guard, as good as they are can’t handle all of this.

Not just any Coast Guard Admiral, not just any Army General, its personality as well as background.
Hope they have the right guy in charge and we can get passed the turf questions.
Perhaps the president should as the Coast Guard Commandant, Thad Allen, to step in. No one else has his experience and he has proven he has the right personality for the work. Homeland Security is maturing into the “Natural Disaster Dept.” The USCG is unique in that it has one foot in the military and one foot in the civilian side and can translate.

JTFs have experience in this (Hurricane Mitch, etc.) — so that is the proper role re: command — although USCG will/should/does play a heavy role.
As transition from rescue (USCG centric) to relief — JTF — feeding requirements back up through to JFCOM and others (mil and civ agencies) — TRANSCOM will have a huge role.
In one sense only the thing good here is that the surrounding countries/islands are undamaged — so can provide staging areas, etc. (unlike Hurricane Mitch)
