Photos From Across The Pond

July 2010

Every year since 1961, the Royal Navy has held a photography competition open to both members of the Navy’s Photographic branch and amateurs photogs in the service. This year’s competition attracted 480 entries showing various parts of Royal Navy life. Last week, the Royal Navy announced the winning entries for 2010. Enjoy.

    Excellent photos.

    The documentary film series Victory at Sea describes how the Spirit of Nelson permeated the British fleet. Time after time, the Royal Navy aggressively joined action, despite very bad odds, and won through. It took very heavy losses, but its opponents knew they would have a fight on their hands any time they challenged it. Such strong history and traditions DO count, when the chips are down, and these photographs fully reflect that.

    Thoroughly agree with Mr. Coatney.

    In 1941, during RN operations in the Aegean and around Crete, and having been advised of the likely consequences of facing huge air superiority, Admiral Cunningham said – ‘It takes a year to build a ship. It takes three hundred years to build a tradition.’

    It took the loss of Prince of Wales and Repulse to convince a lot of British Navy Officers that loss of air superiority was dangerous, but that could probably be said of a lot of American Naval Officers at the time too.

    But I agree, great pictures, of justifiably proud services.

    Chuck – slightly missed the point.

    ABC was a very air-minded officer, having masterminded Taranto (which success had implications for what happened at Pearl Harbour), and knew full well the likely consequences of his 1941 actions.

    Admiral Tom Phillips, on the other hand, was a ‘battleship admiral’ – hence the result.

    I must now admit to a misquote – it should be ‘ It takes 3 years to build a ship. It takes three centuries to build a tradition’.

    In fairness it should be noted that Phillips *was* expecting air cover, which didn’t show.

    Actually it was Phillips, and those like him, I was referring to rather than ABC, for whom I have the utmost respect. In all fairness the Brits had lots of evidence that warships at sea could take care of themselves.

    Lou, I had heard Phillips turned down an offer of air cover. Certainly, even Brewster Buffaloes would have helped.

    I have the little Sea Battles book about this, and I’ll double-check it when I can.
