The 4th of July is one of the most loved and inspiring days of the year in the United States. However, in the early stages of the War of 1812, patriotism proved difficult, and inspiration was in scarce supply. USS Constitution’s victory over HMS Guerriere helped coalesce and inspire the American citizens to fight against the British.

    In 1859, a doctor from my hometown in New England, writing about his boyhood, recalled that Independence Day 1815 saw the whole town out and celebrating defeat of the British, and an air of infectious patriotism among the townspeople. Interesting that the sentiment over the American victory carried through with such energy down to the grassroots level, such that it would hold so prominent a place in this man’s memory.
