As many are looking back at the last decade+ of war, many want to forget. Indeed, as reported by Michael Hirsh in National Journal, “The war on terror is over,” one senior State Department official who works on Mideast issues told me. “Now that we have killed most of al Qaida, now that people have come to see legitimate means of expression, people who once might have gone into al Qaida see an opportunity for a legitimate Islamism.”

Perhaps it is time to look back even further, before 911, to see how we got here.

Our guest this Sunday for the full hour will be Kirk Lippold, CDR USN (Ret), Commanding Officer of the USS COLE (DDG-67) at the time of her attack 12 OCT 2000 in the port of Aden, Yemen – and author of the new book, a first hand account of the attack from the Commander’s perspective, Front Burner: Al Qaeda’s Attack on the USS Cole.

how many USN (MSC) replenishment tankers have been built since USS COLE suffered this attack almost a dozen years ago ? Is the answer: Zero ? Yes, the answer is, very sadly, zero, as in NONE. USS COLE and all her 60 + sisters carry about a half million gallons of fuel onboard. Soon, the Navy will be sending dozens of LCS ships all over the World, and they will need to visit ports far, far more often than DDG’s need to visit ports for refueling. But still…. no MSC Tankers under construction, not even planned ! The US Navy presently has just a handful of MSC underway replenishment oilers and this deficiency puts USN sailors in jeopardy. Did the USS COLE trajedy teach us anything ?

    Retired Now; No, sadly.

This could eventually solve the skimmer Navy’s fuel problems (except for aviation):

Go to the last slide (77) – the rest of the stuff’s interesting too:

I doubt that the Rickover mafia would ever allow it, but they won’t be alive forever.
