I am on a fantastic email distro list and thought I would take this opportunity to share with you an email from Tom Cutler, Director of Professional Publications at The Naval Institute Press and author of: A Sailor’s History of the U.S. Navy, The BlueJacket’s Manual, NAVCIVGUIDE: A Handbook for Civilians in the United States Navy, to name a few of his books:
In my never-ending quest for ways to impart/inspire strategic and operational
thinking to my students in my NWC Strategy & War course, I came across this
article (pdf). It is alluring because it addresses one of the fundamental tenets of
Clausewitz (whom we rely on heavily in the course), but I cannot decide whether
it is (1) brilliantly useful, (2) a question of semantics rather than pragmatic
principles, (3) too difficult for the average student to grasp, or (4) something
else I am too blind to see. If you have a few moments to read the attached and
have some insights/opinions to share, I would much appreciate it.
What do you think?
